Knit Flix:

War of the Worlds vs. Ocean’s Thirteen

This week I thought I’d focus on two movies ladden with leading men. I figured that anyone not interested in either sci-fi or gambling could still enjoy these thanks to all the eye candy.

I love this movie. I do.

I originally read this book in High School and got so scared halfway through that I refused to finish the book. That said I enjoy watching this movie because of the sheer terror I experience.

Something about this movie reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock. I think its the score. Either way this is one of my favorite remedies to stress. I put this movie in the dvd player and I feel giddy like a kid getting off of a roller coaster ride.

I knit fast and feverish when this movie is on. I would caution anyone from knitting anything elaborate to this movie. It can be distracting. *Okay I admit that I’ve dropped a few stitches.

This movie is chock full of eye candy. This smart group of gorgeous guys make films fun. I would say that this score is also a lot of fun to have on in the background.

I would voice one word of caution, if you are watching this movie for the first time don’t knit through it. There are a couple of visual gags and at least three little twists that will make you scratch your head if you weren’t paying attention.

As for me I’ve seen this movie so many times that I can knit without harm.

Good times all around.

Be My Valentine

I thought about crafting a fancy little playlist and plugging it into my blog but I personally hate flash music players. They freeze up my browser. So here are some great tunes. They’re lyrics speak for themselves.

“Hey. Been trying to meet you.” – The Pixies, Hey

“Everyone said go ahead and ask her. Love like yours will truly come my way.” – Buddy Holly, Everyday

“Keep on running. Keep on hiding. One fine day I’m gonna be the one to make you understand.” – The Spencer Davis Group, Keep On Running

“I’d go the whole wide world just to find her.” – Eric Wreckless, Whole Wide World

“Someday my name and hers are going to be the same.” – The Hollies, Bus Stop

“I searched my heart and found there’s a need for you.” – Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, I’m Ready For Love

“I was waiting to be struck by lightning. Waiting for somebody exciting, like you. Oh the thing that you do.” – Camera Obscura, French Navy

“A moment of love. A dream. A laugh.” – The Temper Trap, Sweet Disposition

“You are everything I want. Cause you are everything I’m not.” – Taking Back Sunday, Makedamnsure

“I guess I’m lying to myself. Its just you and no one else.” – The Rolling Stones, Miss You

“All I did was talk about you. Hear your name and I’d start to cry. There’s just no getting over you.” – Love, My Little Red Book

“That girl can still be mine. But I’m tired of the hurt. I’m tired of trying.” – The Ramones, Listen to My Heart

Boy Bands

Just fell in love with one of Face‘s songs by chance it is also the longest song title I have ever seen. It sounded so funny I had to preview it.

“You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything (Even Take the Dog For a Walk, Mend a Fuse, Fold Away the Ironing Board, or Any Other Domestic Shortcomings)?”

Totally worth the purchase price. If you’re a fan of early Rod Stewart this might be a worthy addition to your library.
I find it so adorable I can’t help but hum it to myself.

Favorite lyrics:

You can make me dance, you can make me sing
You can make me do just any old thing, yeah baby

So little bird, don’t fly away, want you here everyday
Don’t ever leave me
I’d rather lose both my eyes
Than never see your smiling face again girl

Taking a Leap

I made a goal in December, may I clarify I did not make a resolution, I set a deadline last month that I would open my etsy shop on January 16th. Ready or not I would add which ever items I had on hand that were ready to ‘ship’.

This week my blog will be a little unfocused. I usually panic as I near a deadline so these blogs will become a little infrequent and scattered.

My mind is buzzing with all sorts of concerns.

That was until I visited this blogger and saw her Sunday post. It may seem strange but I find it calming to look at a color palate.

Now I need to go and work.

Time for Some Changes

The end of 2009 left me with a single thought: what’s next. I may have had a difficult year but I am looking forward to making some necessary changes.

Instead of conjuring up a few resolutions I thought about what I need to do with this year. I have many goals. It is time to take some risks. It was with that thought in mind that I spent the last three days creating a mixtape.

My life before was filled with many dashed hopes.

For Halloween I wanted to create a few zombies for some friends. For Christmas I wanted to create personalized CD sleeves for my parents. My head was cluttered with these little projects. I am sick of over thinking. No more talking myself out of things.

Instead of wanting to make a mixtape I hunkered down and started it one song at a time.

The tape is filled with naughty boys: Beatles, Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Rolling Stones, Pixies, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Violent Femmes, Ramones and The Doors.

The tape is a necessary jolt to the system.

A New Infatuation

I love to read. I am prone to reading some dull books.

I have bookshelves lined with works great and small that bear bookmarks only halfway through. I may love to read but I will not read unless I am passionate about the work.
Which brings me to my most recent Christmas gift, Love is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time by Rob Sheffield.

There is much that could be said about this book. But I think Rob does a great job selling himself. I add here a brief excerpt from the first chapter. I may finish this book tonight. I cannot put it down.

“This mix tape is just another piece of useless junk that Renee left behind. A category that I guess tonight includes me.

I should have gone to sleep hours ago. Instead, I was rummaging through old boxes, looking for some random paperwork, and I found this tape with her curly scribble on the label. She never played this one for me. She didn’t write down the songs, so I have no idea what’s in store. But I can already tell it’s going to be a late night. It always is. I pop Rumblefish into my Panasonic RXC36 boombox on the kitchen counter, pour some more coffee, and let the music have its way with me. It’s a date. Just me and Renee and some tunes she picked out.”

A Vinyl Christmas

Listening to Brenda Lee‘s Christmas Album takes me back to my chilly childhood living in Washington state.

Listening to Vinyl by SemicharmedLife currently listening to, see below:

“Little girls and Little boys
dream of worlds
full of toys
This time of the year
When Christmas is near”

A week before Christmas my parents would disappear to go shopping. Just for the day. Leaving me and my brother to stay home and clean. With the warning that Santa was watching.

The two of us would raid their record collection and play all their Christmas albums.

I remember trying to skip songs. A tricky thing to do with a record but I was a determined little girl. I also had a penchant for playing with the needle. All of which would drive my brother crazy.

But that would be our day. Listening to music. Daydreaming about presents.

The moment our car pulled into the driveway we would scramble to stop the music and tidy the living room. I say we but actually my brother did all the cleaning. I just hid in the bathroom.
He was my big brother that’s how that worked. It’s not Christmas unless there is some guilt.

Love and Music

Just read the lyrics to a song I’ve been listening to, Es Por Ti by Juanes.
Now I am feeling absurdly romantic.

Sufjan Christmas

I hate to admit it but the Christmas Holiday can be tiresome to me because the repetition of traditional songs becomes laughable. I don’t need to hear forty versions of the same pop song from the 50s.

So I opened my heart up to this Sufjan Stevens song. The lyrics are such a relief.

Sister Winter
Oh my thoughts I
Return to summer time
When I kissed your ankle
I kissed you through the night

All my gifts I gave everything to you
Your strange imagination
You threw it all away

Now my heart is
Returned to sister winter
Now my heart is
As cold as ice
